Process
Building a home in Udaipur is one of the largest decisions a family makes — and the architect you choose shapes every day you will spend in it. The city has no shortage of practices, so the real question is not where to find an architect in Udaipur, but how to tell which one is right for your plot, your budget and the way you live. These are the ten questions we would ask if we were in your place.
1. Can I see completed projects — not just renders?
Renders show intent; finished buildings show ability. Ask to see work that is built and lived in, ideally of a similar type and scale to yours — a farmhouse, a villa, an apartment interior or an office. If you can, visit one. Notice the junctions where stone meets wood, the way doors close, how the light falls in the afternoon. Those details tell you more than any presentation.
2. Who is signing the drawings?
In India the title “architect” is protected by law, and only professionals registered with the Council of Architecture may use it. Many strong design-and-build studios work alongside registered architects and specialist consultants. What matters is that you know who prepares and signs your drawings, and who takes responsibility for them.
3. Do you understand Udaipur’s climate and terrain?
Udaipur’s summers are hot and dry, the monsoon arrives in a rush, and many plots sit on slopes or rocky ground around the lakes and hills. A good architect plans orientation, shading, cross-ventilation and drainage around these conditions before thinking about elevation style. Ask how they would handle the west sun on your plot, and where the rainwater will go.
4. How do you charge, and what exactly is included?
Architects in India usually charge in one of three ways: a percentage of construction cost, a rate per square foot of built-up area, or a fixed lump sum. None is better in itself — what matters is the scope. Confirm whether the fee covers concept design, working drawings, structural and services coordination, approval drawings, interior design and site visits, and how many revisions are included. Two quotes that look very different are often describing different scopes.
5. Who handles building approvals?
Depending on where your plot is, plans need approval from the local development authority or the Municipal Corporation, and rules on setbacks, height and ground coverage apply. Ask who prepares and submits the approval drawings and who follows them up. Delays here push the whole project back, so it is worth knowing in advance.
6. How often will you be on site?
Drawings do not build buildings — supervision does. Ask how often the architect visits during construction, who checks the work between visits, and how problems on site are resolved. A beautiful design built carelessly will look ordinary within a few years.
7. Will the same team design the interiors?
When architecture and interiors are designed separately, things fall through the gaps: a beam lands where a wardrobe was meant to go, a switchboard ends up behind a headboard. If you plan to fit out the home properly, it helps to work with a studio that is both architect and interior designer in Udaipur, so the building and its rooms are drawn as one.
8. How do you manage cost and time?
Ask for a stage-wise timeline and a cost estimate early, and ask how changes are priced. The best answer is a process: milestones, regular reporting and decisions consolidated so the site never stands waiting for a choice.
9. What warranty do you give on the work?
Leaks, cracks and failing fittings show up after handover, not before. Ask what is covered and for how long, and get it in writing. At The Batiment we offer a ten-year warranty on our work, because we would rather build it right than come back to fix it.
10. Do your past clients recommend you?
Read reviews, but also ask to speak to one or two past clients. Ask whether the project finished on time, whether the budget held and whether they would hire the same team again. You can read what our clients say on our reviews page.
